IPSWICH CITY BIG BAND – 20 TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT
Saturday 31 August, 7.00 PM
Sold Out!
Ipswich City Big Band’s anniversary concert celebrates twenty years of performance by and for members of the Ipswich community. The concert will display the varied talents of male and female vocalists, featured soloists and the Band across jazz standards and newer works from the jazz catalogue.
Lead by four talented musical directors over twenty years the Band is a regular performer in Ipswich, at regional festivals and the Brisbane Jazz Club.
“This community Big band is without doubt one of the leading exponents of jazz and big band music in the Ipswich area” – Alan Western, Vice-President, Brisbane Jazz Club
Two Ipswich music teachers, Sharon McInnes and Rose Salamanesa, filled a gap in the local Arts scene by forming the big band in 2004, focussed on the opportunity for like-minded musicians to come together through a love of jazz music. Since inception the band has given many south-east Queensland musicians the opportunity to develop skills essential to swing, latin, funk, pop and rock music.
“An amazing Band” – John Hoffman, musician & music educator
The Band’s development has been furthered by master classes from Australian jazz icons John Morrision, Jackie Cooper and John Hoffman.Truly memorable highlights include three concerts at the Ipswich Civic Centre backing celebrated artists Emma Pask, Tenori and Hetty Kate.
The Band’s 10th Anniversary was celebrated with a concert at Studio 188 in Ipswich and the release of a CD recorded at the same venue.
With the enduring commitment of our small membership to make music together for the people of Ipswich and beyond, the band has successfully returned to full rehearsal and performance activities post-Covid. We would love you to join us under the musical direction of Matt Chambers in celebration of 20 years of the Ipswich City Big Band.

CHASING OUR PAST – IN CONVERSATION WITH DANIEL KEENAN
Monday 2 September, 6.00 PM – 7.30 PM
Join Melanie Rush, Ipswich Libraries Digital Archivist in conversation with Daniel Keenan, fourth generation Ipswichian and heritage architect as they reflect on Danny’s long career championing heritage and his love of architecture and design.
Interspersed with personal stories Danny will also share information about Ipswich City Council’s Heritage Advisor service and comment on the future of heritage in Ipswich.
Danny left Ipswich in the mid 1970s to study Architecture at the University of Queensland. Over the next 30 years he worked in both private and public spheres. The majority of his career has been spent championing heritage and design in local government planning departments.
Danny lived in Phoenix USA for several years in the early 2000s, which gave him an appreciation of the harsh beauty of the desert and the impact of large-scale urban sprawl in a sensitive environment. He returned to Ipswich almost 14 years ago and finds a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction in aiding to preserve the buildings that inspired his love of architecture.
Danny’s family have lived in the hills of Woodend for over 120 years, “I grew up in a house which was our family home for six generations. Almost all of those generations were baptised, educated, married and buried at St. Marys Catholic Church. Four generations worked at the Ipswich Railway Workshops. This is not an uncommon story in Ipswich where heritage is a lived experience – the places we live, learn, worship, work and play. Perhaps these strong family roots, multi-generational experiences in the city and its institutions have helped Ipswich retain its strong identity both physically and as community.”
